what is the difference in between an ink cartridge and an ink drum. They both look the same and i know that a drum holds more ink and therefore i can print more pages, but do they both do the same thing, and go in the same place in my printer. plz HelpI have a laser printer and i am in need of a new ink cartridge but i don't know what to buy?
In a laser printer the drum is what the image gets written on. It is metal that conducts a charge when lit by light, The charge repels the toner (ink) which is ferric oxide (rust) encapsulated in plastic. A toner cartridge is the ';ink'; a drum is the device the image is written on to transfer to the paper. HP printers combine both in the single cartridge, Brother and some of the other manufacturers make them as 2 separate items.
If the output is still good a drum is not needed, just buy toner.I have a laser printer and i am in need of a new ink cartridge but i don't know what to buy?
A drum isn't the same thing as a cartridge. Refer to the manual for directions or call the manufacturer's Helpline.

Lexmark put different number's on the ink cartridge's for a reason.That reason is so you won't use wrong ink cartridge in your printer.The answer is no it's not a good idea to use different ink in printer's,even if it doe's fit.Take it back and get proper cartride. Lots of paper towels, soak up all you can, alcohol is ok, don't use any oil based cleaners like paint thinner.varsol or turpentine.
Get as much as you can, Q-tips and other cotton products like balls, just make sure you can get to all the areas the ink is in, the dried ink can cause the belts and pulleys to fail, and then you looking at a replacement, but with Canon and Lexmark selling printer for $35-40 it is something to keep it mind, if the unit is heating the ink cartridge to the point it explodes, there amy be a bigger problem on the horizon.Ink cartridge in HP Color Laser 3600DN just exploded. Yes, the newer laser printer toner cartridge has a smart chip in it to prevent third party refilling the cartridge and re-use it. But I have not experienced the smart chip gave fault signal that the cartridge is empty when in fact it is not. But remember the cartridge that came with the new printer is just a starter cartridge and it is only 20 to 30% full. I am trying to insert a print cartridge in my hp color laser jet printer 2605dn?
i think i ruined one alreadt i pulled off the orange piece of plastic and there was what seemed to be a piece of tape attached to it i kept pulling and i noticed color on it. i cannot figure out what i am supposed to do with it now. how do i put this thing in? PLEASE HELPI am trying to insert a print cartridge in my hp color laser jet printer 2605dn?
So far what you did is correct. The orange tab with plastic strip attached was the sealing tape used to keep the toner inside the cartridge until ready to use. You're supposed to pull that completely off when you're ready to use it.
Open the front door of your printer all the way down, pull out the color of cartridge you're going to replace and insert the new one in the same direction that the old one was. Close the door and let the printer run through its calibration process and you should be ready to go.

If so simply FOLLOW it's guide, but it soulds like you were doing it OK.

The tape you pull out forms an internal seal to stop the toner leaking in shipping.
Remove both and insert.
You need to pull the plastic strip all the way off of the cartridge and dispose. You SHOULD see color (or black) toner, as the actual toner seal is pulled out...so keep on pulling then remove and toss.
