Lexmark put different number's on the ink cartridge's for a reason.That reason is so you won't use wrong ink cartridge in your printer.The answer is no it's not a good idea to use different ink in printer's,even if it doe's fit.Take it back and get proper cartride. Yes, the 640, 642 and 644 use the same cartridge
